ABOUT: Hermaphroditus was a remarkably handsome boy. The naiad, Salmacis, prayed to be united with him forever. In answer to her prayers, the two forms were united into one, thus being transformed in a hermaphrodite. The name is a compound of his parents’ names, Hermes and Aphrodite. Hermaphroditus is associated with marriage where the relationship embodies both masculine and feminine qualities.
