ABOUT: Very simple lines in black and white communicate clarity. Youth (the present) contemplating death (the future). It’s an age-old theme, though still resonates for us.
ABOUT: The circle is the symbol of unity, of oneness. The path to experiencing oneness is through meditation, and the path of meditation leads to a mind empty of the unnecessary. Attention to the breath is the means to sweeping the mind. The artist often enters the meditative mind to create. Thus, brush sweeps mind.
ABOUT: Sloth is one of the Seven Deadly Sins. It’s challenging to portray sloth as most slothful poses just look boring. I decided to present death as the ultimate state of not-doing. The ultimate non-action.
ABOUT: Purity is one of the Seven Heavenly Virtues, as opposed to the Seven Deadly Sins. I decided to take a twist on the virtue where nudity (a book on nudes) is being censored (tossed in the trash). Figure art has long struggled with puritan values and faced censorship. I personally experience this with a social media site that limits what kind of figure art can be posted. Violence is accepted, yet the unclothed body is not permitted. This is a subject very close to me. I recognize social norms, yet see how prudish values dominate conduct.
ABOUT: How we see others is not how the camera sees others. A person is always in movement as we speak. To render this sense of movement, and acknowledge this aspect of perception is the inspiration for this painting.
