ABOUT: Every year, I do a portrait of my son. To draw or paint someone is to know someone. It’s an intense observation of another person. I often do 2 versions, offer one to my son, and keep the other for myself
ABOUT: Envy is one of the Seven Deadly Sins, a series that was a delight to create and put into a new context. Humor is intended. The model is scrutinizing from afar, or maybe jealously spying on neighbors. Or is she watching us?
ABOUT: A take on the mythological story of a character obsessed by his/her/their own image. This was part of a series of work that revised characters from mythology.
ABOUT: I had asked Julia to bring anything to our session that was of importance to her. Anything that was meaningful, and that represented her. She brought her guitar. The shape of a musical instrument perfectly compliments the form of the human body. Playing music we expose our true self, just as we do when naked. It feels right to paint a person naked when making music.
ABOUT: In my personal quest to understand America, I’ve endeavored to appreciate the contradictions, complexities, strengths and dark side of the place in which I live. I believe we can separate the grand culture of America from the politics of America. Though politics reflect this country, it is also a small part of something that is much grander, complex, diverse, and difficult to grasp. Politics is less nuanced. There is a self-destructiveness to the American political system, especially the phase we’re living through. I attempt to convey this here.
