ABOUT: Within weeks of each other, my mother-in-law and an elderly friend of mine passed away. Neither was unexpected, yet these losses prompt us into deep contemplation and introspection. Departure is a result of this phase of my life, and is an acknowledgement of the inevitable stages of life.
ABOUT: A simple portrait. She often wore this crucifix to our sessions, not of religious conviction, but more of a fashion statement. Her image of more Goth-Punk with many piercings and tattoos. I celebrate the way people choose to decorate and enhance their appearance. So, the crucifix has become a feature in this watercolor.
ABOUT: A long used device, the mirror continues to fascinate us. From Alice’s looking glass to the Evil Step-Mother, there are many and interesting ways of using the reflection to explore all variety of subjects. Here, the model glances back to see herself and also to see, through the mirror, what is in front of her. Past and future.
ABOUT: This painting grew out of a question – What is America? There is no simple answer to this as there are many, many answers. None conclusive. Yet I observe patterns and respond to daily headlines. We’re acutely aware of the seemingly endless stream of violent crime in the U.S., and we readily see how we’re all consumed by the self-absorptive nature of our present technology. We (some of us) are overtly inwardly absorbed, yet disconnected and disengaged with the outer world surrounding us. This is not a criticism. This is how it is, for some of us.
ABOUT: Narcissus, in Greek mythology, was distinguished for her beauty. Narcissus’s mother was told by a blind seer that her daughter would have a long life, provided she never recognized herself. However, she fell in love with her own reflection in the waters of a spring and pined away; the flower that bears her name sprang up where she died.
